How to Convert GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, and GoToTraining Recorded Video Format

Citrix, the company that makes GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, and GoToTraining hasn’t made it easy to both playback or edit any presentation video recordings made with GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, and GoToTraining.  If you use the faster Citrix’s own GoToMeeting format, editing is impossible and playback requires a separate codec most computers don’t have.  Also, playback on a Mac is impossible without running Windows via a virtual machine like VMware Fusion.  If you record in the Windows Media Player, depending on the length of your presentation the recording may take a long time to convert after you end your presentation.

Previously I used the Windows Media Encoder to convert the GoToMeeting’s version of WMV file (which required the codec) to standard WMV file (which any media player should be able to play).  But apparently with the “GoTo” group of products’ upgrade to a new codec, G2M4, the quality of the videos converted with Windows Media Encoder was terrible.  Many dislocated pixels and red pixels were being blurred with black backgrounds.

The easier solution seems to be Windows’ new Expression Encoder 4, the free edition is enough.  Do so by running a GoToMeeting format presentation recording through Expression Encoder, as shown here by Citrix’ Community Leader & Social Media Support Glenn D.  Using the method Glenn D shows on his blog makes it much more efficient and practical to run several GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, or GoToTraining presentations back to back or with some other time and computing power constraints.
